Castor Oil and Lavender - Short Summary
Setting: Cincinnati, 1837-1838

Dr. David Wheeler (Luke Wheeler's son from Ample Portions) treats a superstitious German immigrant woman by using his wit rather than typical medical treatment. Although the woman miraculously recovers, onlooker, Josephine Cline mistakenly believes that Dr. Wheeler is a fraud and sets out to ruin his practice. Foes from the start…until they both get involved helping the same German family and share a wondrous turnabout of mind and heart.

"Josephine. Let's leave this crowded room," David whispered. "It's not healthy to breathe in all this stuffy air."
"By all means, Doctor. I commend my health into your capable hands."
They entered a room of science and he turned to face her. "I wish you would not do this," he said.
"What? What am I doing?"
"You are being too charming for my own good. This is going nowhere."
"I do not understand," she said.
"Us. It won't work."
"I do not intend to let you analyze our friendship with logical deductions."
"You are too late. I have already done so," David replied.
"You have weighed the pros and cons and found me wanting?"
"No. Not you. You are witty, vivacious, and dangerous. It is me. I do not have time to exert energies in such entertainments. I have aspirations, causes, very serious day-to-day issues, boring stuff that fills my life. I have no time for amusement and games, engaging as you are. If you respect me and care for me at all, you will honor my wishes."
"You're afraid of Father. I know that he can be quite intimidating. He knew I was coming with you tonight. Once he gets used to the idea of . . ."
"Oh for pity sake, Josephine. Have you not been listening? You are . . . are lavender, and I am castor oil."
"That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I'll tell you what you are! You are a fool!"
